ALL BACK TO MY PLACE

dick jr.

What music are you currently grooving to?

Tyler Childers’ album Country Squire. I’m obsessed.

What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favorite album?

Tough one and I’m going with a tie: R.E.M. – Fables of The Reconstruction and Soul Coughing – Ruby Vroom

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?

First record I ever owned was a gift from my Uncle Walter. He gave me Foreigner’s album ‘Double Vision’ on my 10th birthday.First album I ever bought myself was The Clash – Combat Rock. And I bought it at what I think was called The Sound Shop or something like that. It was the one and only record store in the Green Hills Mall in Nashville, where I grew up.

What do you sing in the shower?

I make up my own songs, usually heavily featuring the body parts I’m soaping up at the time. My kids love it but it drives my wife crazy, which pretty much sums up the dynamic in the house in most situations.
Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be?

Name them! I want to be every musician. I want to be Mike Mills (of R.E.M.), I want to be Chris Stapleton, I want to be Lester Flatt and/or Earl Scruggs, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, I want to be Paul Kirby (of Walk the West), George Jones, Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, and Colm Wilkinson - the original ‘Jean Valjean’ in “Les Misérables.” The list is endless. I admire musical talent so much – in bands, in theater, wherever. I have never seen a great performance by a band, big or small, or a great piece of musical theater without immediately thinking, ‘Man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to do that.’

What's your favorite Saturday night record?

I have a playlist that is my main go-to and has been for a while, and I keep adding to it.

As of now, it consists of Tyler Childers, Brandi Carlile, First Aid Kit, Ashley McBryde, Ray LaMontagne, The Marcus King Band, Ian Noe, The Lumineers, Marc Broussard, and one Pink song featuring Chris Stapleton.

Interestingly, all these artists and tracks were introduced to me by Jensen Ackles. We have very simpatico tastes in tunes. The only band on this playlist he didn’t bring to the table is Boy Named Banjo. These guys are great and not only from my hometown but also from my high school. And they just signed with a big label. I freakin’ love that!
Boy Named Banjo - The Tanglewood Session
Ian Noe - Between The Country
Ray LaMontagne and the Priah Dogs - God Willing and the Creek Don't Rise
The Marcus King Band - Goodbye Carolina
Marc Broussard - Carenco
The Lumineers - Cleopatra
Pink - Hurts 2B Human
Ashley McBride - Girl Going Nowhere
First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar
Tyler Childers' Country Squire
Brandi Carlile's By the Way, I Forgive You
And your Sunday morning record?

Silence.
It’s Sunday morning now as I type these answers and there’s not a sound to be heard. We are a family of five and have been living in a one-bedroom cabin all summer, with kids (and a dog) sleeping all over the place. I’m an early riser and am always the first one awake by a long shot. If I make a peep, I’m a dead man.
